Sing your face off.

Written by: Mike Schlote in "Family, God"

Nothing brilliant to express today, just some thoughts I had the other night while I was attending a school event for my daughter.  At first I considered my thoughts a bit dorky, but the more I thought about it, the more I concluded that there was Truth in what I was thinking.

If you are a parent, you’ve probably experienced the sounds of a concert put on by young kids.  The director is doing her best to maintain the proper rhythm and pitch, but there are moments where the words “train wreck” come to mind.  Occasionally, the entire group lands on the same beat with the same note and it pleases the senses.  Then, just as quickly as it came, it is once again derailed by an over-aggressive bongo player or a distracted youngster giggling about the shenanigans of an attention hungry child in the front row.  Ah…the sounds of an elementary school concert.

But, I got to thinking.  What is the source of my pleasure?  Is it the sounds themselves?  Perhaps a little.  But more than that, it is the experience of watching young people sing their faces off and hope their parents are pleased.  To see the eyes of the child connect with the eyes of the parent…and then watch as their face responds with joy when they get the thumbs-up from Mom and Dad.  THAT is the pleasure.

I think it is much the same for those who are children of God.  Our performances are not perfect and we don’t always stay in rhythm.  But I wonder if God observes us and smiles as He sees how hard we are trying to please Him.  It isn’t the performance itself that brings Him pleasure, but rather our desire to please our Father.  Our performance may best be described as one of a toddler with a toy drum, but watching His children try their best and seek to make Him happy is like a chorus of angels to the ears of God.  He hears the pleasing sounds of a mighty symphony.

As I perform today, it is my desire to make my daddy happy and to see His smile as our eyes connect.  I long for Him to hug me at the end of the concert and be told that I did a great job.
